Parts of the Body

Parts of the Body in Italian

In this lesson, you will learn how to name five essential parts of the human body in Italian. Knowing these words is very useful for describing how you feel or seeing a doctor!

Key Vocabulary

  • la testa - the head
  • il braccio - the arm
  • la gamba - the leg
  • la mano - the hand
  • il piede - the foot
  • ho - I have
  • fa male - it hurts
  • il corpo - the body

Grammar & Usage

In Italian, body parts usually take definite articles (il for masculine, la for feminine). For example, la testa means 'the head'. Note that mano is a feminine noun ending in -o (la mano), which is an exception to the usual rule!

Common Patterns

To express pain, use [body part] fa male (My [body part] hurts).

Example: La testa fa male. (My head hurts.)

Common Mistakes

Don't forget that la mano is feminine even though it ends in -o. Always say la mano, never il mano.
