Counting from 21 to 100 in Italian
Welcome to Unit 3! Now that you know numbers up to 20, let's learn how to count all the way to 100. It is easier than you think!
Forming Tens
First, learn the multiples of ten:
- venti (20)
- trenta (30)
- quaranta (40)
- cinquanta (50)
- sessanta (60)
- settanta (70)
- ottanta (80)
- novanta (90)
- cento (100)
Combining Tens and Units
To form numbers like 21, 34, or 55, simply take the ten and add the single digit. For example:
- venti + uno = ventuno (21)
- trenta + due = trentadue (32)
Important Rule: When combining a ten with uno (1) or otto (8), the final vowel of the ten is dropped to make it easier to say!
- venti + uno = ventuno (not ventiuno)
- quaranta + otto = quarantotto (not quarantaotto)
For other numbers, the vowel stays: venti + tre = ventitré.
Common Mistakes
Don't forget the accent on numbers ending with 3, like trentatré or sessantatré!
