Making Nouns Plural in Italian
In Italian, nouns change their endings to show whether they are singular (one) or plural (more than one). This lesson covers the two most common patterns for regular nouns!
1. Masculine Nouns: -o to -i
Most masculine nouns end in -o in the singular. To make them plural, change the -o to -i.
- il ragazzo (the boy) → i ragazzi (the boys)
- il libro (the book) → i libri (the books)
2. Feminine Nouns: -a to -e
Most feminine nouns end in -a in the singular. To make them plural, change the -a to -e.
- la ragazza (the girl) → le ragazze (the girls)
- la penna (the pen) → le penne (the pens)
Common Mistake: Don't forget to change the article too! Il becomes i, and la becomes le.
