There Is / There Are

Describing Rooms in Italian

When you want to say that something exists or is located in a place, English uses there is or there are. In Italian, we use special forms starting with ci!

The Two Main Forms

  • C'è means there is. Use this before a singular noun (one thing).
Example: C'è un letto. (There is a bed.)
  • Ci sono means there are. Use this before a plural noun (two or more things).
Example: Ci sono due sedie. (There are two chairs.)

Asking Questions

To ask if something is there, simply change your intonation or use question phrases:

  • C'è un divano? — Is there a sofa?
  • Ci sono finestre? — Are there windows?

Common Mistakes

Don't use c'è with plural words! Always remember: C'è for one, Ci sono for many.
