Colors

Describing Colors in Italian

In Italian, colors usually come after the noun they describe. Unlike English, adjectives in Italian must also change their endings to match whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural!

Basic Color Rules

  • Most color adjectives end in -o (masculine singular) or -a (feminine singular).
  • Colors ending in -e (like verde) stay the same for both masculine and feminine singular nouns.

Examples

  • La casa è rossa. (The house is red. - casa is feminine singular)
  • Il tavolo è blu. (The table is blue. - tavolo is masculine singular)
  • La porta è verde. (The door is green.)
  • Il letto è bianco. (The bed is white.)

Common Mistakes

Remember not to put the color before the noun in basic sentences. Say la penna rossa (the red pen), not la rossa penna.
