Expressing Concern for the Planet

At the B2 level, discussing the environment requires moving beyond simple active sentences. To sound more formal and objective, Italian uses impersonal constructions and the passive voice. These structures help emphasize the action or the issue rather than who is performing it.

1. The "Si" Construction (si impersonale / si passivante)

To state general rules, facts, or recommendations without a specific subject, use si followed by a verb in the third person. When the verb has a direct object, this is the si passivante: the verb agrees with that noun, singular with singular nouns and plural with plural nouns.

• Si deve ridurre l'uso della plastica. (Plastic use must be reduced.)
• Si proteggono le foreste piantando nuovi alberi. (Forests are protected by planting new trees.)

2. The Passive Voice (Essere / Venire + Past Participle)

The passive voice focuses on the receiver of the action. It is formed with an auxiliary verb (usually essere or venire) plus the past participle, which must agree in gender and number with the subject. Venire is used only in simple tenses (viene affrontato, not *è venuto affrontato).

• Le risorse naturali sono sprecate ogni giorno. (Natural resources are wasted every day.)
• Il problema climatico viene affrontato dai governi. (The climate problem is being addressed by governments.)

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Forgetting number agreement in impersonal structures.
Correction: With plural nouns, the verb must be plural: Si sprecano (not si spreca) le risorse.
