Future Environmental Scenarios & The Future Perfect

Welcome to Unit 3! In this lesson, we will explore how to talk about environmental outcomes that will be completed by a specific point in the future. To do this, we use the futuro anteriore (future perfect).

How to Form the Future Perfect

The future perfect is a compound tense. You need the auxiliary verb essere or avere in the simple future tense, followed by the past participle of the main verb.

  • Avremo ridotto le emissioni entro il 2030. (We will have reduced emissions by 2030.)
  • Entro il 2050, la foresta sarà cresciuta. (By 2050, the forest will have grown.)

Choosing Between Essere and Avere

Just like in the passato prossimo, verbs of motion, reflexive verbs, and verbs indicating a change of state take essere and must agree in gender and number with the subject. Transitive verbs take avere.

  • Avere: Io avrò protetto (I will have protected)
  • Essere: Molte specie si saranno estinte (Many species will have become extinct - reflexive estinguersi, feminine plural agreement)

Common Mistakes

Don't mix up the simple future and future perfect! Use the simple future for actions that will happen (e.g., ridurremo = we will reduce), but use the future perfect when emphasizing that an action will be completed prior to another future moment (e.g., avremo ridotto = we will have reduced).
