Mastering the Language of Science in Italian
Welcome to Unit 7! In this lesson, we explore the advanced verbs and structures required to discuss the scientific method. Whether you are proposing a theory in a lab or writing a research paper, precision is key.
1. Verbs for Hypothesizing
When presenting a hypothesis, B2 speakers move beyond basic verbs to use subjunctive structures and conditional framing.
- Ipotizzare (to hypothesize): Gli scienziati ipotizzano che il virus sia mutato. (The scientists hypothesize that the virus has mutated.)
- Presumere (to presume): Non possiamo presumere che i dati siano corretti. (We cannot presume that the data is correct.)
- Supporre (to suppose): Supponiamo che l'esperimento fallisca. (Let us suppose the experiment fails.)
2. Verbs for Experimenting
Describing methodology requires specific actions regarding observation and testing.
- Sottoporre (to subject/submit): Dobbiamo sottoporre il campione a un'analisi chimica. (We must subject the sample to a chemical analysis.)
- Rilevare (to detect/note): Lo strumento ha rilevato un'anomalia termica. (The instrument detected a thermal anomaly.)
- Verificare (to verify): Vogliamo verificare l'attendibilità della fonte. (We want to verify the reliability of the source.)
3. Verbs for Concluding
Drawing conclusions involves synthesizing results and evaluating implications.
- Dimostrare (to demonstrate): I risultati dimostrano l'efficacia del trattamento. (The results demonstrate the efficacy of the treatment.)
- Concludere (to conclude): Possiamo concludere che l'ipotesi è valida. (We can conclude that the hypothesis is valid.)
- Inferire (to infer): Da questi indizi possiamo inferire una correlazione. (From these clues we can infer a correlation.)
Common Mistakes
Be careful not to confuse verificare (to check/verify) with controllare. In scientific contexts, verificare specifically implies testing a hypothesis for truth.
