Mastering the Passive Voice and Historical Consequence

When discussing history, science, and technological inventions in Italian, the active voice is often replaced by the passive voice to highlight the object or invention rather than the agent. At the B2 level, you should be comfortable with both standard passive forms and historical consequence structures.

1. The Passive Voice (Il Passivo)

The passive is formed using the auxiliary verb essere (or sometimes venire for active processes) combined with a past participle that agrees in gender and number with the subject.

  • La stampa fu inventata da Gutenberg. (The printing press was invented by Gutenberg.)
  • Molte scoperte vengono fatte per caso. (Many discoveries are made by chance.)

2. Historical Consequences (Strutture di Conseguenza)

To express the historic impact of an invention, use structures like tale da... (such as to...) or al punto che... (to the point that...).

  • L'elettricità ha rivoluzionato il mondo, al punto che la nostra società dipende totalmente da essa. (Electricity revolutionized the world, to the point that our society depends totally on it.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid mixing up auxiliary verbs. Do not use avere in passive constructions. Remember that the past participle must agree with the subject in gender and number!
