Project Management Tasks

Mastering Workplace Dynamics: Delegation & Deadlines

Welcome to Unit 2! In professional Italian settings, managing projects requires finesse. Today we will learn how to assign tasks using the formal imperative and express expectations or doubts regarding deadlines using the subjunctive mood (congiuntivo presente).

1. Delegating with the Formal Imperative

When assigning tasks to colleagues or team members in a polite professional environment, use the Lei (formal) form of the imperative:

  • Si occupi di questo progetto, per favore. (Take care of this project, please.)
  • Verifichi i dati prima di inviare il rapporto. (Verify the data before sending the report.)

2. Discussing Deadlines with the Subjunctive

When expressing urgency, necessity, or doubt regarding schedules, verbs like vogliono che, dubito che, or impersonal expressions like è essenziale che trigger the subjunctive:

  • Dubito che completino il report entro venerdì. (I doubt they will complete the report by Friday.)
  • È fondamentale che la riunione inizi puntuale. (It is essential that the meeting starts on time.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid using the indicative mood after expressions of doubt or necessity. Always switch to the subjunctive (e.g., say voglio che tu finisca, not voglio che tu finisci).
