Daily Hygiene & Reflexive Verbs

In Italian, when you do an action to yourself, you use reflexive verbs. These verbs end in -si in their dictionary form, and they need a reflexive pronoun (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si) before them.

How to conjugate "lavarsi" (to wash oneself):

  • io mi lavo (I wash myself)
  • tu ti lavi (you wash yourself)
  • lui/lei si lava (he/she washes)
  • noi ci laviamo (we wash)
  • voi vi lavate (you all wash)
  • loro si lavano (they wash)

Similarly, vestirsi (to get dressed) changes to mi vesto, ti vesti, si veste, and so on!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't forget the reflexive pronoun! Saying "Io lavo" usually means "I am washing something else" (like the dishes or the car). To say you are washing yourself, always include mi: "Io mi lavo".
