Sports and Exercises in Italian
Welcome to Unit 8! In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about sports and physical activities. In Italian, the verb we use depends on the type of sport.
1. Team sports with balls: Giocare a
When you talk about playing a game or a sport with a ball (like football or tennis), you use the verb giocare followed by a. Often, a combines with the definite article:
- a + il = al (e.g., giocare al calcio - to play football)
- a + i = ai (e.g., giocare ai videogiochi - to play video games)
2. Individual sports and verbs of movement
For sports you do individually, you use the verb directly without giocare a:
- Nuotare - To swim
- Correre - To run
- Fare yoga - To do yoga
Common Mistakes
Don't say giocare nuotare! Swimming and running are standalone verbs. Use giocare a only for competitive and ball games.
