The Verb 'Potere' (Can / To Be Able To)
In Italian, potere is a very important modal verb used to say you can do something, or to ask for permission. When shopping, it is essential for polite requests!

Using 'Potere' with Another Verb
Just like in English, potere is followed by the base (infinitive) form of another verb.
- Posso pagare con la carta? (Can I pay with card?)
- Non posso comprare questo. (I cannot buy this.)
Common Mistakes
Remember that the infinitive stays unchanged after 'potere'. Do not conjugate the second verb! Say posso aiutare (I can help), not posso aiuto.
