Talking About Family in Italian
Welcome to Unit 2! In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about your family members in Italian. Family is very important in Italian culture, so these words are extremely useful!
Key Vocabulary
- la madre (mother) / il padre (father)
- il fratello (brother) / la sorella (sister)
Masculine and Feminine Words
In Italian, most nouns have a gender. Words for males usually use il (the), and words for females usually use la (the).
| Italian | English |

Common Mistake: Do not mix up fratello (brother) and sorella (sister)! Remember that sorella ends in -a, which is typically feminine.
